WLI Update June 2016

New Partners

New partners this month include two Russian wetland centres, the Nenetsky State Natural Reserve, and the Imeretinskaya Natural Ornithological Park.

WLI internship programme

We are still working to promote the WLI Internship Programme, open to suitable graduates / early career professionals who could lend support to the WLI programme, based at WWT’s Slimbridge Headquarters, UK. Click here for more information, and please send on to anyone who might be interested. Deadline 17th June, with Skype interviews on the 23rd of June.

MBP Africa

The Migratory Birds for People Africa group continues to meet via Skype, and we are making plans to take part in the next Pan African Ornithological Congress in October, Senegal. We will hold a round table discussion on wetland centres and developing the network and also work with colleagues to hold an introductory workshop on communication along the flyway.

Flight of the Swans

Plans continue with the North-Western European flyway project, with our intrepid colleague Sacha flying by paramotor. We are working with partners are wetland centres and other sites to hold community events, work with schools and meet local people. We will be producing a community events toolkit, and a learning toolkit as part of this project, to be shared with all WLI members. See the new FotS website for more!

Brazilian Visitor to WWT Slimbridge, UK

Ellen at Steart Marshes

Ellen at Steart Marshes

Ellen Amaral from Mamiraua reserve in Brazil received a Ramsar award to visit WWT Slimbridge and find out about the wetland centre and what it delivers. She spent a week with us and met colleagues from conservation, policy, education, community engagement and volunteering and of course with the WLI Manager. She also presented the best practice in community fishery management from Mamiraua, a good learning experience for all of us!

Question

Does anyone know of a wetland centre that provides sustainable and wetland-themed food and drink? Do you sell sustainably sourced products, or food from local producers?  Our colleague in Colombia would like some examples, so any responses would be most welcome! Drop us a line if so at wli@wwt.org.uk
